In 2012 the Arts Council England awarded Sussex Museums Group a grant for a pilot project to evaluate the conservation needs for museums of all sizes across the South East and to follow up with practical advice and conservation. The grant was also intended to establish a long-term support network for collections care so that the skills and expertise developed by the project can be retained and shared.
The CSI South East Museums team, who managed the project, are a group of trained conservators with different specialisms, able to give remedial conservation and advice for a wide variety of objects and collection type.
The CSI team also targeted museums for conservation training and advice to staff and volunteers. The legacy of the project was to lay down a strong foundation of heritage conservation in the South East and create a strong connection between the museums and the conservation profession.
The Sussex Museums Group Executive Committee are currently working on new and exciting project ideas to build on the success of the conservation project for our wide Membership. We will keep you posted!
